Listen closely and you can almost hear the beat. It's ``Pomp and Circumstance,'' the tune that echoes through the corridors of every college this time of year. It's time for commencement - not an end but a beginning, as many graduation speakers are sure to intone.

But what do members of the class of '97 have to offer? What are their hopes, their plans and their ideas?

The Virginian-Pilot talked to five soon-to-be graduates at local colleges and universities. Their stories are as varied as their smiles, but all cling to the dream a future made brighter by a college education.
